This webinar will discuss opportunities to use labour migration as an environmental change adaptation strategy in the Caribbean. In a region highly vulnerable to disasters as well as to slow-onset events such as sea-level rise and land degradation, labour migration may offer opportunities for vulnerable populations to adapt to a changing environment.

The positive outputs of labour migration are however dependent on adequate frameworks and mechanisms. The webinar will explore the relationship between climate change and human mobility and address the need to adapt labour migration arrangements to enhance their positive outcomes.

The webinar will address the following items:

  • Migration and environmental change in the Caribbean;
  • Labour migration potential as an environmental adaptation;
  • The way forward: Challenges and opportunities in the Caribbean.

Panelists:

Michela Macchiavello is the IOM Regional Thematic Specialist on Labour Migration and Human Development.

Pablo Escribano is the IOM Regional Thematic Specialist on Migration, Environment and Climate Change covering the Americas.
